Here is the problem:
Students (most if not all) go into college with the perception that the powers that be have structured the educational system for their major into a concise program that should cover most of their future needs. At the music level it does not. Yes, their are electives but most students are ignorant to the fact that a couple of basic business classes would help them out tremendously in the future. My arguments are to round out the music degree programs and then let the students use electives for more specific music courses or ensembles. This is how it is in many other degree programs. And if you did go to a small liberal arts college, you probably did not see some of the policies of the larger state or state size music programs. A major downfall of these degree programs is career counseling.
To counter your argument for degree-less personell at XYZ college, most schools who are seeking accredation are required to have at least bachelor's degree faculty and mostly master's degree holding people and a good number of PHD/DMA's. Some schools don't care, like Julliard, but many and most seek this accredation, especially state universities, so that they can keep up with the other degree programs/departments, and show some justification for the spending of the student's/taxpayer's money. Their are plenty of faculty who are hired under certain provisions who may not have a degree, but the number is quickly decreasing.
You're right no one can keep students from leaving, but the schools should be respnsible for at least trying to equip students with the proper tools to suceed after graduation.
