I agree that music is for the listener, but just because some people like listening to and watching marching bands, doesn't mean that it should be required for anyone to participate as part of their music program. If someone wants to participate, great, but making it a requirement unfairly takes a large chunk of time that those same students could be spending partying, oops I mean on other studies.
My daughter decided to join the marching band this year at Cornell. They have around 200 members and it is a totally student run, volunteer organization. They may not be the largest or the best, but they are as enthusiastic as any I have seen, maybe because they all volunteered.
