Think of all of the raw brass instruments that you've seen that are perfectly intact after many decades of fairly heavy use.
Anyone who would try to sell someone a $3000 plating job who didn't specifically come in the store asking about one has boogers for brains, IMO.
If your valves are working perfectly, your slides are working OK, and your tuba is not full of [your repair buddies' brains], I'd leave it alone.
