Perhaps, it is an interesting and completely plausible theory you present. But really, we are only arguing over semantics. In essense, we're saying the same thing. The bigger tubas have a pitch center that is easy for those around it to identify and match (assuming the player is playing somewhat close to in tune), for whatever reason. Whether that clarity of recognition is because of fundamental or overtones in the sound, I am only guessing. One of the great research topics for this century should be the study of how different people perceive different musical sounds and why. I think there is much more than meets the eye here regarding how we conceptualize the sounds we here. This is part acoustics, part anatomy, and part psychology but I think it might be all interesting.

My opinion for what it's worth...
