I got my Silent Brass about two months ago. Now I'm normally pretty adept with figuring things out, but I have no idea how the clamps you speak of work. Maybe they are broken on mine as well... there is no type of mechanism to make them clamp to anything! But the only way I have been able to use this so far, and I've gotten used to it, is to just set the system up, put the mute inside, and just sit the mute in there without any clamping security. The top of the mute is heavy enough to make it work. In my living room, it works! If I had to go on the road however, I wouldn't trust it. I don't think the sound has been affected, but I am a little worried about extended use like this.
If you find anything out, I would be interested in the result. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, I was just wondering if this was a similar problem to yours.
