My interest in British made brasses has often been stated. Yet I am no more of an expert than my sources will take me.

Your statement: "Actually, the tenor tuba Holst wrote for looked very much like a euphonium" is one, that I very much would like to know the source for. (Another poster has paraphrased a quite common quote from the same Holst).

What I have seen of documentations of British euphs since the Distin days has told of parallel lines of compensated and non-compensated euphs. Both lines have had similar bell and bore proportions. These proportions have been developed towards those of the present smaller Sovereign version.

But at no single moment, that is until your posting, have I met any clue, that the instrument, that Holst wrote his Planets’ tenortuba part for should be another one than the euphonium of his time.

Please convey any information you might have on this point.

Klaus
