Actually, the tenor tuba Holst wrote for looked very much like a euphonium. They evolved from the tenor member of the saxhorn family. A euphonium is a tuba that just picked up the the name somewhere in the earlier part of the 20th century. Although their are rotary versions of the tenor tuba, they are better known as kaiser baritones and oval euphoniums. Both are still made by Miraphone and Cerveny. I think you can see examples of both instruments or Miraphone's web site, www.mirapone.de .
