Seriously, the case holds the horn in the soft, springy foam but the bell is suspended (without the foam around it) in an air pocket at the bell end of the case. I always wondered about this arrangement because I thought (wrongly, it seems) that encasing the bell like the rest of the horn would offer more protection.
Perhaps some structural engineers have been consulted afterall.
My opinion for what it's worth...
