I have been in the exact same situation as you for the past four years-- east coast and chicago, even! Que ridiculo. At any rate, I initially had some problems flying my tuba in a hard case, but after I made some modifications to the case to adequately protect the tuba, I had no problems whatsoever. Just be sure the valves are really well protected. Also, make the case as heavy as feasibly possible by putting stuff like blankets, clothes, etc in it. If the airline's weight limit is 80lbs, make the case weigh 79lbs. This will prevent the baggage handlers from throwing it around freely, which they will do given any opportunity. If it's heavier they'll be forced into treating it well.
