I used to farm out a little bit of polishing and lacquer work to a shop in another state. One time, I had a vintage King "Duo Gravis" bass trombone with "zero" dents & "zero" wear. Unfortunately, there were some ugly factory-lacquer acid runs around the rotors' solder joints.

I received the instrument back the the bell obviously repaired and a torn bell rim with lead solder blobbed into the crack. After I called them on it, they replaced the bell and re-relacquered the trombone...no "vintage" bell available, obviously.

I sent some stuff (then) to another "reputable" buff-and-lacquer shop. A professional Yamaha cornet (no damage / no thin spots) came back (no comments from the shop) with a patch over the entire curved part of the mouthpipe (!!!!).

I simply don't accept such work anymore. I only relacquer instruments that WE own and are preparing to offer for sale.
