For those of you not familiar with the Chicago area, Naperville is toward the western boundry of the area. Much of the "do it in MY neighborhood" syndrome comes from those who live in Chicago proper, maybe the same can be said about an major inner city. People live a lifetime of having everything they want close by. Many do not own a car, a mile is like going to a different planet. Many live their lives in the city and rarely leave it - nothing wrong but you need to understand this.

When you put a group together in a city such as Chicago, I think the key is having a number of splinter groups located in different areas around the area that may get together weekly then get together as a large group once a month or so for events. Do more local practicing and meet at different locations. Communication is the key - this would not have worked in the 80's but now it is not a problem.

A different approach to doing tuba ensembles in a major city!
