I just bought a whole bunch of new sousaphones and we bought Bachs, which are exactly the same as Yamaha. They are very nice horns. Well built, nice sound, comfortable to carry. In short, they are excellent.

We chose these instruments over Conn 20K only because of cost and availablitity...mostly the availability. When we ordered our horns, Conn had too long of a wait and they were considerably more expensive than the YamaBachs. We have not been let down in anyway with these instruments.

Jupiter... the 4 valve thing sounds neat. However, we had one in as a demo and quickly decided against it. The workmanship was not great and the sound was a little stuffy. I wouldn't say it was an awful horn, but the 4th valve wasn't cool enough to worry about quality issues. I've had Jupiter sousaphones before. They sounded ok and they were cheap...but they just didn't last. That old cliche, "buy cheap, buy twice" really describes my experience with Jupiter.

I think your band director would be pleased with Yamaha sousaphones.
