Painful Sousaphone Design

Well, seeing as our band is marching in the Indianapolis 500 pre-race and raceday parades(live on ESPN2 on the corresponding dates, at whatever time) it is only logical that we get out the band's sousaphones. With the aforementioned "new" King 2350's, the more senior members of our section are set. I am left with one of the old Conn 14K's. Plenty of volume and sound, uncomfortable neck and bit position, weird tuning-what's not to like?
The problem with this horn relates to a strange "comfort" device on the place where the horn touches your neck/shoulder. There is a plate that is designed to distribute the weight better, for more comfort. However, the plate's edge(the plate is like the metal piece under the guard wire on a 20J)cuts right into one's neck, and hinders the placement of a pad, which neutralizes the effect of said pad. I wonder what might be done to correct this problem, especially seeing as the Indy parade is 5 miles long!
The other alternative is a POS Jupiter that weighs a metric ton. Help is appreciated.
