Thanks for your comments, js; you answered the question I was asking (if Conn did make unplated valves). I appreciate it, and your beautiful York hybrid helicon is not yet out of the running - I'm still making decisions! Can't take a thing like a tuba purchase too lightly!! ;)
Here's another newbie question;
You stated that most of the unplated Conn valves you've seen have been leaky and badly worn;
will replating bring them up to "good as new" status, or can nothing be done for them at that point?
Also, can an instrument not play well even if the valves are leaky?
