You run into my open doors. I took part in a discussion down the board, where some guys pleaded against public subsidies of arts and culture in general.
I think though, the government owes this to the people, as well as parents owe guiding to arts to their kids (but scarcely do nowadays).
All our public top orchestras in Germany are under public state administration and payment, so their chances to survive recessions are much better than in the open and independant private market, where orchestras have to act like industrial companies.
However, in general the tendencies are in the way you describe them. Human nature is to prefer to be passive over to be active; and the modern hardcore entertainment industry
supplies all the passive on the surface "easy go" ears and eyes food.
You are very courageous to criticize the Western way of life - seldom to hear in our world, but you have all my respect!
