The high harmonics that make articulations clear come out of the bell along
its axis whilst the lower harmonics tend to come out sideways or perpendicular to
the axis. The lower the more so. Thus upright bells tend to sound muddy in
fast passages compared to bell front ones. Also those old BATs in many cases
were meant to use bell front bells and don't play as well in tune with upright
bells.
