My suggestion is start playing anywhere you can, paying or not, great literature or not. "Paying" jobs will come if people get to know and hear you, and like your playing and you. Unfortunately that MM in tuba performance, although nice, doesn't help a whole bunch in the freelance world (as you must already know). I'm smimming in the same pond you mention and can tell you that there is some work around, but you have to pay dues and stand in line.
