I'd suggest Doug Yeo's articles as an excellent starting place. KV Smith wasn't the first F player in the BSO. Also, photos of early orchestras will not necessarily show tonnage in the low brass--look at the size of trombones used, etc. Robert Rusk has devoted a great deal of research to orchestral equipment and would be a great resource. To suggest that small tubas first appeared in the '80's would be off base. For that matter--look at the pros who used small CCs in the '70s...
