Yup, security. Sure, you have to get tenure first. Once you have that, though, your there for as long as you want to be, unless one of two things happens: 1.) you screw up so badly that tenure doesn't protect you, or 2.) your orchestra folds.

Granted the liklihood of the latter is greater than for some other industries and less than for others. But that axe is poised over everybody. I'd bet that Enron handed out more pink slips that have ever been issued in the history of professional orchestras. A local employer around here, a minor concern by the name of AOL-Time Warner, just laid off something like 8000 employees a week or two ago, if I recall the story correctly. Security, such as it is, is as good for a tenured musician as it is for lots of other folks. Of course, it's radically harder to get the job in the first place, but that isn't a security issue.
