Joe, you do entrust your livelihood to many others: your customers, your employees, your government, and, of course, whoever you call God. A breakdown in any of these relationships could lower that axe.

For example: The city could buy your shop's land for a roadway project (Summer is an important street, right?). You can complain, and get compensated, but your customers may not all follow you to your new spot. Your shop could burn down. An employee could get to feeling abused and file an EEOC complaint--it would not have to be valid to hurt you. You could have a heart attack and not be able to work the hours you do now. And so on.

Can you ever really depend on anybody, even yourself? Self employment is no safe harbor.
