I have seen several Holton tubas amd have notice the height difference before. In fact, when I picked up my CC from the factory there were two to choose from. One was 3" shorter than the other. On advice from my Mr. Jacobs, I choose the one with the best low register.

My guess is that so few large tubas were made at Elkhorn that they forgot how to make them. Inconsistancy was to be expected. This is not to demean the excellect craftsmanship of some of those people. There wre real artists working there.

However, no one had an explanation for the height difference even though two horns were standing side by side. dp's tuba is a taller one.
