I've heard this story was not necessarily such a nice story. I've heard that the motivation behind the donation was to get rid of some of the older players in the orchestra, hoping to replace some of the "deadweight" with some younger players. I may be way off, but it seems like there is something more than kindness to a donation with such strict directions for disbursment.
