Anything other than the approach of learning a second set of fingering only causes more problems further down the track. It's much better not to have gaps in one's learning, and/or tricky "work-arounds" for either reading or fingering.

It never takes much in the long run to remind yourself what key horn you are holding and home in on that system/key/sound/relationship to the written notation.

But do point out to the student that the sequential patterns of valve combinations ARE the same (just up a 4th, or whatever) because it is still (and always) very advantageous to be familiar and fluent with scale patterns etc., this fluency will be of benefit on any horn of any key (and any system of reading).
