Try a narrower cup. Small horns may get a darker tone with a big mouthpiece, but oversized ones like the Conn Helleberg may simply not fit the horn's response and cause a loss of control. Try borrowing a Bach 18 or 24AW for a few days.
Also, do you now have facial hair that you didn't have before? I had to remove all of the beard parts on my upper and lower lip to be able to play low notes when I recently got back into playing.
