Well, maybe it IS a LITTLE lame, but what if it was accompanied by an extensive survey of known professionals who all were willing to spend at least 15 minutes (Maybe that isn't enough time.) with each of a "set" of, say, 20 or 30 mouthpieces, and answer questions about their opinions of the individual mouthpieces. Then, try to relate consistancies of shapes to consistancies of comments. I really WOULD like to see a "sideview" of some of the better mouthpieces to see how their cups transition into their throats.
Lame, maybe, but it would beat what a "jazz" professor (D.M.A.) did for his one year sebatical at a state university here several years ago. "Well XXXX, let's have a summary of your sebatical activities and research." XXXX replied, "uhhhhhhhh...."
