This is always the catch 22. If in order to get invited to an orchestra audition, you have to already have a job, how do you ever get started? There are many who get invited to auditions without holding a full-time orchestra gig. I would say having major summer festivals on your resume is a start (Tanglewood, NRO, NOI, PMF, and others) - for those on this board that don't know what the major festivals are, do your homework, they all have websites - ask your teacher about summer festivals - if your teacher doesn't know ask a professional performer somewhere who does know. Having subbed in a full-time orchestra is another way to start getting invited to auditions. Many orchestras have sublist auditions. You can also get a lesson with the tuba player and trombone players of the orchestra with which you'd like to sub. If you sound great at the lesson they might call you for a subbing gig.

As for Singapore. If you think you should get invited and you aren't, you have several options. Ask them to reconsider (the worst thing they can do is say "no"). Find out if you have any contacts in the brass section (look at their website to see who is in the section). If you yourself don't know anyone, find out if anyone you know or have ever played with has any contacts with anyone in the section. If you can somehow through your own contacts or your teachers contacts get in touch with someone from the orchestra, maybe they can put a good word in for you and get you invited.

Good luck.
