I recall Mr. Jacobs on more than one occasion, cited Marcel Tabuteau, Philadelphia's principal oboist, and Curtis faculty member as the major influence in his early musical development. Tabuteau taught a class in orchestral playing that all woodwind and brass players were required to take. He was stern and demanding, and took no prisoners. In addition, Mr. Jacobs was working regularly in the Curtis orchestra under Fritz Reiner, and others such as Stokowski. And then of course there were lessons and numerous opportunities to hear Donatelli, by all accounts, borne out by numerous recordings, an excellent player.
