Here's a few data points for you:

Mike Sanders in St. Louis studied with Arnold Jacobs and with Cherry Beauregard (while at Eastman), but I don't know how much of each. His study with Jacobs I believe came after winning his San Antonio gig, but I don't know that for sure.

Sumner Erickson of Pittsburgh studied with Rick Colvin and Steve Bryant (UT-Austin), and I'm sure others after he got his gig.

Lee Hipp of San Antonio studied with Dave Kirk and I'm sure others (Don Little?)

Don Little (formerly) of Fort Worth studied with Arnold Jacobs, plus, I'm sure, others.

Floyd Cooley (formerly) of San Francisco studied with Bill Bell.

Jay Bertolet of the Florida Philharmonic studied with Oscar LaGasse before he got his gig.

There are only a few professional orchestral tuba players, and fewer still who studied with teachers who are still teaching. I suspect the population is too small (MUCH smaller than the military tuba corps) for any patterns to emerge.
