For me I have learned that second and third impressions about an instrument, derived after hours of practice and rehearsals and performances in a variety of circumstances are what give the best sense of what will work for me. This is a very powerful concept that I'd encourage ANYone to consider, since we are all impressed with the novelty of new (or different) hardware when we first try it out.
