We've covered this terrain before. I actually ran the numbers, and I recall concluding that the force couple applied by a finger moving straight down but offset by a half inch was an order of magnitude less than the force couple caused by pushing the edge of the button with a 45-degree vector.
In English, it means that pushing the valve straight down with an offset button is about ten times better than pushing it sideways because you can't reach it.
