Some of the old 60's era Alexes had leapipes that were almost a straight hunk of tubing and I think the old super-sized Alex receiver didn't help much. Replacing the leadpipe on an old Alex makes one considerably easier to play. I've got BBb 163 with a Giardinelli-made leadpipe and aside from the really flat 3rd line D, it's a pretty nice horn with a big sound.
