I'm not so sure that the 189 was discontinued. During the weekend of Feb. 13-16, at TMEA in San Antonio, Texas Miraphone has a brand new 189 in their booth. I didn't look a ton different than, say a 187, and I don't think the slanted valve layout is so extreme that you won't be able to use a regular case of gig bag with it, but I'm not sure.
Played well...I have a CC now, but I had always wanted to try one, so I did and found that I liked it a lot...not better than the 1291 or 191, but still a great tuba.
