John Stevens performed a recital a few months back at my school. For his legit part of the program he used his Willson Eb but for the jazz section he used his Miraphone 185 CC (I think). He was just more comfortable improvising on a CC horn I guess, but he sounded excellent on them both. I have seen performers use various makes and keys of horns. The YFB-621 was quite popular at the 2000 ITEC if I remember correctly, the ol' Lazy Owl was just too good to me, he he. I belive Sam Pilafian used a Meinl Weston F (45s?) on his Makin' Whoopee Travlin' Light album, but I may be wrong. It is all about personal preference and if you can produce enough sound for the ensemble. My teacher's choice is his MW 182 (just about the smallest of the small) or least that is everytime I have seen him perform, and he produces a monsterous amount of sound on that little tuba.
