In the big band experiences that I have had, the leader wanted a tuba big enough to be heard. Fast playing ability was a very close second to the ability to be heard in the group. In one instance, a bell front horn was almost required because of the inability of the band at the time to mike the tuba. On other occasions, I felt more confortable with a conn 5J until the leader told me that he wanted a bigger sound than the horn would produce.

In my way of thinking, I decided to try the new 2341 (not an advertisement) because it offered a bigger bell and body assembly with the smaller bora and valve set. Miking the horn doesn't require a larger stand, and it is more moveable.

I do switch from upright bass to tuba, so my uses wouldn't be for a tuba within a trombone section. A person in that set-up might see things differently.
