If you are looking for a good 4/4 all-around throw in the 52 and 56 Conn and the PT20 as well.
Whoever your instructor is, my hands off to him. That is some of the best advice anyone can give a student.
I always tell people to not let what others say influence you. Go out and try every tuba you can get in front of and especially if you can try them at the same time.
If you know what sound you are looking for in your and head, heart and soul and how the tuba feels and it is easy it is to play in all registers for you like Eric says, then you are lucky.
Be appraised that mouthpieces do make a difference in some models when you go to try them out and really affect how they play and project and espcially in intonation.
All 3 tubas are good and have totally different playing and sound characterists. Find the one that fits you.
