...and did you hear the concert the previous spring (Herseth's last Mahler 5th in Carnegie, I think) where the orchestra played some Boulez piece called Notations #4 or something like that? Barenboim introduced this work as well with a l-o-o-o-n-g and painfully detailed explanation. It had several movements, and the audience sat through it and applauded politely at the end. Barenboim spoke after the piece (everyone trying to run for the bathroom at that point), then announced that the orchestra would repeat the last movement before intermission. The huge groan of dismay from the audience was almost the best thing I heard that evening!
