You could well be on to something. As to what I (Did you mean me?) think about it, I learned a long time ago to be more of a "tryer" than a "theorizer" or even a guesser. I respect very much those who theorize, but my theories often don't pan out. For me, spending the money, trying something, and either liking-it-and-keeping-it or not-liking-it-and-tossing-it-out-on-ebay has offered me the best success in mouthpiece trials, etc.
For us-type-o'-guys, buying twenty disappointing mouthpieces and reselling them on ebay, for instance, might approach 1% of the cost of just buying the TOOLS to MAKE oboe reeds (not to mention the cane), for example.
