a "cut horn" is a one-off beast, Bob Rusk USED to "cut" horns,
so have various crafters at Dillon's. NOW at Dillon's I understand
they basically custom-build tubas using parts from more than one horn
sometimes. Thus, there is no real fair way to characterize playin characteristics
of a horn based simply on who did the work. ie it depends on the horn.
f.w.i.w. horns reworked by Mr. Rusk which had a 5th valve added
almost always had it done in the lead pipe - some people think
less of that than having it after the valve body, but MY Rusk-cut horn
has really great low notes and the 5th valve is be for the valve body.
Thank goodness I played the horn before getting my mind clogged with scads
of input from thoreticians.

my .02 cent's for what it's worth, hope it helps
