That's an interesting idea, Rick. Sousa was a showman and it would have been quite noticeable if there was a top-action section with a side-action section leader/soloist! In addition, Sousa endorsed Conn instruments and allowed very few band memebers to play with "non-Conn" horns. I've never seen a picture of Sousas band where you could see Helleberg's instrument clearly, only the others!
