I concurr with the foreign object theory. In addition I once had a pinhole leak near the valve section of my old Besson Imperial. It changed the response of the horn and the response of my embouchure in several subtle ways that added up to some real intonation and tone quality problems in some registers of the horn, while others were mostly OK but a little unresponsive. Until the problem was located and repaired (two days later) by an expert repairman I thought my playing was really going downhill. My $.02.
