I caught the concert in Chicago last week. The volume may have been excessive in the last movement (but it was such good ensemble in the brass that I didn't care) but at the performance I heard the 1st movement was wonderfully balanced. I sure hope tubists in the audience appreciate how exquisite Gene's playing in the quiet movement was. "Liquid Gold" was my friend's description. I agree.
