Originally the 981 was sold as being "a concert model designated for seated playing". Low-set leadpipe, neither lyreholder nor carriage rings. The shorter leadpipe lead to a faster expansion rate from receiver to valve cluster.

Since the low-set leadpipe version has been left. But the faster expansion has been kept. The leadpipe can be seen to expand right out of the receiver, which is in contrast to the 982.

I do not know of further differences between the 981 and the 982 than those listed here (leadpipe, lyreholder, carriage rings).
