The words "branch" and "bow" are synonyms, as far as I'm concerned.

"Bow" is used more on tubas and "branch" is used more on sousaphones, but personally I've used both terms on both types of instruments.

Some people call the big bottom "U" branch the "bottom bow" and the first top branch PAST the bottom bow the "first branch", but others call the "bottom bow" the "first branch", so you can't be certain as these terms are not fully agreed upon.

The only tapered part of a tuba that I would think could ONLY be referred to as a "branch" would be a tapered part that is NOT in a "U" shape.

(I believe, technically, that "bows" turn 360 degrees, and not 180 ;^)

I'm not blaming any individuals for this confusion, as I must avoid more attacks from the fearless scourge of aol: "anon".
