Re: Jazz tuba major: Granted, I graduated 17 years ago (ouch!), but policy then was that you had to play decent bass trombone to land in a lab band. That seemed prudent then, and still does. The lab bands were GREAT experience! Every day we'd read 4 or 5 new charts-- straight through, no stopping. My sight reading took a quantum leap!
Gotta agree also with the others' assessment of Don Little. An excellent teacher, and was able to give me the tools to start on a well-grounded career in music.
P l u s . . . I grew up in Denton, Texas, so of course I have a soft spot for my home town :^)
