the mechanics of playing

I have a question. I played tuba for about ten years, during that time I got to be good enough to do some serious giging. But two years ago I was offered a spot playing trombone in a local pop band and have been doing that pretty seriously up untill about three months ago. I left the band to pursue the tuba once again seeing that it is of course my first love. The problem that I found to have is that I totally have to rebuild my chops. Where I live there are zero good tuba teachers around so I've found the next best thing a trumpet player who studied for years with Jacobs. He insists that while playing the tounge must never touch the back of the teeth or, heaven forbid, go through the teeth. My question is, is this true of playing the tuba? It makes sense while playing the trumpet but I'm killing myself trying to do this. Please Help
Thanks, Matt
