Whether or not the brass on a finished instrument is hard or soft depends on the techniques used to manufacture the horn. The more brass is "worked", the harder it gets. The brass gets hard during processes such as spinning, thus the brass needs to be annealed and re-annealed many times to keep it soft which of course makes it easier to mold. It also reduces the risk of the brass cracking. Some manufactures of brass instruments use newer techniques that *may* require less repetitive working of the brass which may leave the brass in a relatively soft semi- annealed state. Hence the difference in manufactures.
