Some composers have specified whether bass tuba or contrabass tuba is to be used for some things. Bruckner knew the difference and specified. Where-as Strauss marked lots of things bass tuba, but still had parts in the basement. I'm wondering how much liberty we have as a performer to change horns from the composer's intent. If Bruckner(easy example) heard a bass tuba in his head when writing the piece, who are we to use a 6/4 York? Just something to throw out there.
