This is the kind of critical listening I was taught in school many years ago. For many years, I thought that was the best way to listen to things.
I was wrong. While I can listen for differences in the tone quality and even in variances in intonation, that's not the reason for listening, in my opinion. The reason for listening to an artist is for the musical interpretation. The differences in tonal quality or recording techniques can make a difference but the real reason to listen to anyone is for the music. I believe I let my criticism of techniques beyond my control get in the way of many hours of pleasurable listening as a result.
When we look upon ourselves as musicians first and as technicians second, we have a chance to really enjoy music.
