I have observed an American style of playing the F, which is to pull it out only for the high parts. This leaves many Americans with a dismal lower register on this horn...and we know that 'low notes are where it's at!' The Germans play everything with their Fs and have great lower registers. They typically choose a 6 valve rotary while Americans prefer the 4+1 valve piston. Germans are trying to sound like tubas while Americans seem to prefer sounding like euphoniums. H. Critchley
