I know what you mean, some horns just aren't laid out to use a main tuning slide as the primary adjuster. Usually, you have to have a vertical main for this to really work. But even that isn't a guarantee. My Nirschl 6/4 has a vertical main but one side of the slide has all of about 2 inches of travel. Not much use. Thankfully that horn plays really well in tune so it isn't an issue. I had a student once who had a Scherzer BBb and it had the typical side pull main slide. He had a lever mechanism installed to adjust the main and it worked okay but it was a little clunky. Ultimately, I suppose you have to take all this stuff into consideration when you're figuring out just how you will approach intonation issues. Just as long as they get addressed!

My opinion for what it's worth...
